Motivation is Garbage: The 5 second Rule

The 5 second rule is a science based blueprint designed to increase productivity and defeat procrastination. Based on Mel Robbins new book “The 5-Second Rule”, the premise of the 5 second rule, is that success is not achieved through motivation, but action. If you are serious about self-improvement this rule can change your life.

The main motivation behind the 5 Second Rule is to help defeat procrastination, by developing the habit of action. Developing this powerful habit puts success on autopilot, and allows you to live stepping outside of traditional boundaries, and face fears that are obstacles. The 5 Second rule is very simple, however implementing it is the part that takes effort.

Here is what you need to know to to take Advantage of the 5 second Rule. (5,4,3,2,1…Go!)

  1. Our Minds are designed to stop us. (The Spotlight Effect)
  2. Every single problem we face, is linked to Silence and Hesitation.
  3. You are one Decision away from a different outcome.

Our Minds are designed to stop us.

When it comes to reaching our goals, the number one cause of failure, is failure to take action. It seems as if “motivation” is the missing factor, however the only things we are ever motivated to do are the things that are easy and formed habits.

Until we take action, to use discipline to form the proper habits, we are left utilizing our bad habits leading us down the wrong path. Use your willpower and discipline to form the right habits and in time you will reach all of your goals, or take action and “try until” you reach your desired outcomes.

The reason success is so elusive is that because most of us have formed bad habits, and if you do as everyone else does, you will have what everyone else has. Doing the same as everybody else is the opposite of success and our desired goals. As humans we usually choose the path of least resistance, and peer pressure causes us to cave in to bad habits. Making the choice to go the different route can be a very difficult decision to make.

Decisions about the future

Every single problem, we have faced can be linked to Silence and Hesitation.

The five second rule is a crucial trick for outsmarting the human mind. Combined with the proper use of pleasure and pain, we often view more pain to taking action and doing what we need to do rather than staying safe and doing nothing. Not to mention going against societal norms can be quite difficult and it is often easier to stay silent and do nothing. Long term this can cause pain but we often favor short term pleasure in comparison to long term pain.

You are only one decision away from a different outcome.

Our decisions shape our destiny, and life’s a never ending journey. The sooner the journey begins, the faster the desired outcomes will be achieved. Most of us fail to take the first step, however, that is only where things begin.

When you push yourself to take the steps necessary to move your life forward, you create momentum. This momentum increases confidence, building on productivity and effectiveness.

In the moment of taking action you will never truly “feel” ready. If you want to improve the quality of your life, you have to force yourself to move. Move and take action, until a habit is formed. Once you form the proper habits success becomes easier.

All it takes to use the 5 Second rule is to count down from 5-4-3-2-1 and go take action. The actions you take determine the future.
